Late Push for most Magnolia hunters

Will Rives with his outstanding swamp buck taken
during the 2010-11 Mississippi whitetail deer season.
In two-thirds of the state, Mississippi's deer season will come to an end this weekend (Jan. 31).

Across the state, there have been some great stories of deer harvests, from Will Rives monster Pope & Young stud, to the solid-mass rack of Casey Orr, the hunter from Choctaw County that was getting all kinds of Twitter and Facebook play on his buck.

Rives story can be seen on Mississippi Sportsman's web site, which includes video commentary by Rives, and longtime outdoor writer Andy Crawford.

Orr's brute — 20-point, 207-5/8 green-score
Orr reportedly killed his buck in December at distance of 12 yards with a replica .444 during the primitive weapon season. There are 20 scoreable points on this brute, with a green-gross of 207-5/8. Cha-Ching! ;)

Forecasts are for warmer than normal temperatures this weekend, so the hunting will be tough, but I think the push will produce a few good bucks, at least good enough for the braggin' post.

The South Zone of the state will see an open deer season until Valentines Day (Feb. 15).

If you want to submit your big bucks of the 2010-11 season, send them to ACS Media, and include your name, phone number and a brief description of how you took the big boy!
